The monk fruit name might not be very common, but you may have heard of luo han guo, "Buddha fruit" or "fruit of longevity," as it is known in Thailand and China. These are all names for Siraitia grosvenoori, a vine of the gourd family that possesses a particularly valuable and powerful fruit.
The sweetness of the monk fruit comes from natural antioxidants called 'mogrosides', much sweeter than sugar and with fewer calories. It is famous for its intense sweetness without bitter aftertaste. This unusual fruit is exponentially sweeter than sugar, with high concentrations of fructose and glucose, but the sweetness comes from unique glycosides in the flesh of the fruit.
